Does your shoulder act up every time you go to grab something off of the shelf or when you’re carrying your briefcase? Shoulder pain is something that happens to a lot of people at some point during their lifetime for a variety of different reasons. If your shoulder pain is severe or if it isn’t responding to rest an at-home care then it’s time to find out how our orthopaedic shoulder specialist can help.

Causes of Shoulder Pain

There are many problems that can lead to shoulder pain; however, the most common types of shoulder problems include:

  • Tendon issues (e.g. bursitis; tendinitis)
  • Arthritis
  • Fracture
  • Instability

While not as common, shoulder pain can also be the result of an infection, nerve problem, or tumor. It’s important that if you are experiencing severe pain after an injury or if your shoulder pain doesn’t go away after a few days of at-home care, that you seek a medical evaluation from our orthopaedic specialist, Dr. Pollock.

Your Visit With Us

During your evaluation, we will go through your medical history, which is important for understanding past shoulder issues or injuries that may shed light on what’s currently going on. We will also ask you questions regarding the symptoms you are experiencing before evaluating your shoulder.

In order to provide an accurate diagnosis, additional testing such as an MRI, ultrasound, CT scan, or x-ray may be necessary to see what’s going on inside the shoulder. This is often the case for those dealing with ligament, tendon, or joint issues.

Treatment Options

The treatments we recommend will be based on the type and severity of the injury you are experiencing. Common treatment options include:

  • Resting
  • Altering daily activities
  • Taking medication
  • Physical therapy and rehabilitation
  • Therapeutic exercises
  • Surgery

Surgery is not usually the first option when it comes to treating most sources of shoulder pain; however, in cases where there are reoccurring shoulder dislocations or there is a tear, surgery may be the best way to repair the problem.
